An ancient tree has fallen

An enormous one, that for decades
Sheltered many a bird
Those seeking shade from the glare of injustice
Those building nests of freedom in its branches

The rumble of its fall
Echoes through Bondo, where
Its roots once stirred the red earth
That gave it strength 

The crash of its fall
Reverberates across Kenya, where
Its trunk has flattened hearts with heartbreak

The boom of its fall
Resounds through Africa, where
Its branches howl in the wind of
Its lifelong song of democracy

A tree has fallen
An ancient tree has fallen

But its roots still hold the earth
And new shoots rise in its name
